About the

Sisterhood of Carpenters Association

Sisterhood of Carpenters Association (SOCA) builds power, connection, and opportunity for women in the carpentry trade through leadership, strategy, and mentorship. We organize sister carpenters to strengthen our culture and expand inclusion across the trade. This site helps UBC women across the U.S. and Canada connect, find resources, and choose how to get involved.

Who We Are

SOCA is a member-driven association led by women carpenters. We organize, galvanize, and teach—so sisters have the tools to navigate the trade, step into leadership, and advocate for working conditions that protect and uplift women on the job.

Our work is practical and action-oriented: we help members understand and use existing union benefits, build leadership pathways (office, delegate roles, business rep opportunities), and develop the confidence and skills to move up the ladder—or build something of their own.

Who We’re Here For

SOCA is here for UBC women in the carpentry trade—from apprentices to journey-level carpenters to leaders—across the U.S. and Canada.
You might be:
  • New to the trade and looking for guidance and community
  • Experienced and ready to mentor, advise, or lead
  • Working to improve conditions locally and push an agenda that benefits sisters
  • Looking for training, continuing education, or a niche to grow your career
  • A supporter, sponsor, or ally who wants to help strengthen the work

What we offer

SOCA is building a platform that supports members in three core ways:

Connection

A way for UBC women across the U.S. and Canada to connect with SOCA and each other—so we can grow a strong, organized network.
  • Connect with sisters across the U.S. and Canada through the Member Index
  • Find members by involvement type (contributing, mentor/advisor, mentee, active member, sponsor/supporter)
  • Build relationships across locals/regions to share what’s working on jobsites and in the hall
  • Strengthen communication so sisters can support each other faster and more consistently

Knowledge

A member-accessible resource library designed to help you:
  • Utilize benefits and opportunities already available through the brotherhood
  • Become a contributing member (run for office, become a business rep, serve as a delegate)
  • Advocate for sisters (resolutions, fundraising, bylaws/CBA language enforcement)
  • Level up at work (career growth, entrepreneurship, training and continuing education)

Organizing + News

An organizing forum that shares conferences and events, highlights sisters doing amazing work, and makes it easy to get involved.
  • Updates on conferences, trainings, and events (plus how to participate)
  • Clear ways to get involved in SOCA initiatives and ongoing work
  • Highlights of sisters across different areas and the amazing things they’re accomplishing
  • Links to aligned nonprofits/organizations/caucuses we support (and their media/websites)

Why We Started SOCA

We started SOCA because too many women in the carpentry trade were being left to figure it out alone—on the jobsite, in the hall, and in the systems that shape our working lives. When sisters are isolated, the same barriers repeat: fewer pathways into leadership, less access to shared knowledge, and fewer opportunities to build the kind of culture that keeps women in the trade and helps them thrive.

SOCA exists to change that through organizing. Organizing is how we build real, lasting support—across locals, across regions, and across generations of sisters. It’s how we connect women who want to step up with women who’ve already been there. It’s how we share strategies that work, coordinate action, and push for protections that matter—through resolutions, fundraising, and enforcement of bylaws and CBA language that safeguards sisters on the job.

Mentorship is a core part of that organizing. We believe every sister should be able to find guidance, share what she knows, and grow into leadership—whether that means running for office, becoming a business rep, serving as a delegate, leveling up at work, or building something of her own. SOCA is here to help make those pathways visible and achievable.

This platform is one tool in that mission: a mobile-friendly home base where UBC women across the United States and Canada can connect with SOCA, build a member network, access a practical knowledge base, stay informed about events and conferences, and choose meaningful ways to participate—contributing member, mentor/advisor, mentee, active member, sponsor, or supporter.

We believe in...

Sisterhood + Connection

Women in the trade deserve a strong network. Connection turns isolation into support—and support into collective power.

Leadership Pathways

Leadership is built and taught. Sisters should have clear pathways to run for office, become a business rep, serve as a delegate, and lead with confidence.

Mentorship

Mentorship strengthens the whole trade. Whether you’re learning, teaching, advising, or doing all three, there’s a place to contribute and grow.

Advocacy that Protects Sisters

Sisters should have the tools to push an agenda that benefits women—through resolutions, fundraising, and enforcement of bylaws and CBA language that protects us on the job.

Skill + Career Growth

Every sister should have access to training, continuing education, and practical strategies to become a rockstar at work, move up the ladder, find a niche, or build something of her own.
